| TREAT - Coup De Grace (Frontiers)
Look who's back! I rememeber reviewing TREAT's debut plater, "Scream & Bite" - back in the day in 1985, along with BON JOVI's "7800 Farenheit" and CONEY HATCH's "Friction". All were pretty good, Jovi was in-fact - the weakiest of the trio and look how that turned out?! TREAT reformed in 2006 and this is their 'return' release, "Coup De Grace" and to be honest, this is a great hard rock album, with a plethora of catchy and crunchy melodic rock songs - of the highest calibre and it's far superior to what the New Jersey boys deliver nowadays! With excellent production and a shit-load of good, consistent tunes in tow, this is a very good listening album that has a plethora of warmth, melody, crunch with the Swedish rockers delivering a very, fine product indeed! There's 14 songs on offer including 2 ballads and surprisingly - even the sombre opening track, there's not one song herein that is a dud or throwaway, yes, you read right - including the ballads that are second to none, as far as ballads go! The rollicking bombastic, The War Is Over - kicks off proceedings in fine fashion, a tune that contains just a hint of Joe Lynn Turner era RAINBOW while one of the trump cards, All In - is an absolute 'killer' song, cracker riff, awesome groove and anthem chorus - a song that should have you tapping ya feet, banging your head, an absolutely fabulous hard rock song! Next up is another gem, Paper Tiger - again containing a great riff, excellent melody - showing many within the genre just how to write great, catchy, commercial hard rock! Well there's more meaty, melodic rock courtesy of, Roar - which lives up to it's namesake, with a strong chorus topped off with great light 'n' shade dynamics - another winner. It takes a real good ballad to impress yours truly, TREAT however deliver first class ballads that have excellent arrangments, real passion that far outweighs most within the genre with their countless cheesy offerings. Mid paced rock returns via, Tangled Up - a meaty example of class, style and melody - all wrapped into one, presenting another excellent melodic rock song. The meaty sounding, Skies Of Mongolia - zips along with punch, with an ascending chorus topped off with a burst of keyboards, adding a nice touch. The mid pace groove of, Heaven Can Wait - is as infectious as a STD but without the baggage, a great melodic tune with a ton of substance on offer. There's no let up as, I'm Not Runnin' - bursts out of the speakers, reeling in the listener with a very catchy melody line, backed up with a crunching little rocker, then it's a trip in up tempo territory with, No Way Without You - possessing an almost LOVERBOY groove with a strong, stampeding rocker that stomps all the way home! The second of the album's 2 ballads, We Own The Night - is the superior of the two with a cruising tune that almost has a DEF LEPPARD/EUROPE/STARSHIP feel, with a tasty melody, topped off with excellent vocals - another winner here. The melodic canter of, All For Love - gallops along with another crunchy song of impeccable quality, that like most herein - simply has a top notch class. Finishing off this highly entertaining album is the driving, Breathless - another trump card, with awesome melody, great groove - it's all here, brilliant stuff! TREAT's "Coup De Grace" is a first rate, melodic rock 'masterpiece' that is an extremely, consistent and thoroughly enjoyable outing - that is seriously worthy of the 'Classic' hallmark - and it'll be a very serious contender for Melodic Rock's - 'Album Of The Year' - I shit you not! | AIRBOURNE - No Guts No Glory (EMI)
This is the second album for Australian hard rockers, AIRBOURNE - following up their impressive 2007 debut platter, "Running Wild" - which was widely accepted by rock fans around the world. The hype from numerous European magazines/fanzines, has been almost fanatical - praising these Aussie rockers for a couple of years now - many claiming that AIRBOURNE are the band to take over AC/DC's crown in the near future?! While being an Australian band, airplay in the land 'down under' has so far - eluded these working class heroes as is the case with numerous Australian hard rock or metal acts! Rock and Metal - are still 'dirty words' in mainstream Australia - as it was when AC/DC left to tour England in the mid 70's. Only after the death of Bon Scott - did Australian radio start playing our icons again with any consistency! The new AIRBOURNE CD, "No Guts No Glory" - picks up where the debut left off, with more of the same balls out attitude, stomping and bruising - their way through 13 slices of rock & roll heaven. Most of the songs herein are up tempo and crank from start to finish, with the majority possessing simple, sing-a-long choruses - that will stick in your head. Kicking off we get, Born To Kill - which blisters away setting the pace for all to hear, then we drop into medium paced territory, No Way But The Hard Way - chugging along, then it's almost a pop flavoured tune, Blonde Bad & Beautiful - which romps along with a song that has single/video - stamped all over it. We go up a gear for the next song, Raise The Flag - a stomper which explodes out of the speakers, a loud & proud anthem of the maximum kind. Slowing down via, Bottom Of The Well - a classy little light 'n shade rocker of impeccable quality, then we visit medium paced rock with, White Line Fever - stomping and weaving it's magic. Break neck head banging is raised with, It Ain't Over Til It's Over - a crushing song that will whip you into a frenzy! (think Whole Lotta Rosie) The groove of, Steel Town - stamps it's authority, while Chewin' The Fat - returns to stomping rock flavour, followed by another slice of medium paced rock courtesy of, Get Busy Livin'. The slow grind of, Armed & Dangerous - is probably the CD's most laid back and slowest tune, while Overdrive - revisists the medium paced groove again, then it's balls out for, Back On The Bottle - a full throttle rocker (AC/DC's I'm A Rocker) that zips along and closes the album in fine fashion. Being an 'old school' rocker who loves, this style of no nonsense hard rock - who grew up with AC/DC - I love what AIRBOURNE do, but I'm probably a little biased as I love numerous acts that play this style like, Rhino Bucket, Krokus, Rose Tattoo, Johhny Crash, etc. I must admit that I find it strange, that most of the above acts get ridiculed for imitating Acca Dacca - while AIRBOURNE seems to go unscathed for doing the exact same thing - which seems hipocritical, considering they virtually rip off every idea, riff and melody - known to man! While AIRBOURNE nails it with their new CD, another great Australian rock act - The Poor, blew it BIG TIME with their recent return platter, which should of kicked your head in but failed miserably! Thankfully, AIRBOURNE's "No Guts No Glory" - is definitely this generations' AC/DC - a thoroughly enticing hard rock album that cranks from start to finish with more Acca dacca riffs than - an Angus Young songbook! It's great Aussie rock - If you love the style, this is the album for you! (8/10) |
| CRAZY LIXX - New Religion (Frontiers)
It must be something in the water? Sweden seems to be the new mecca for melodic rock acts as here's another Swedish melodic rock act CRAZY LIXX - who definitely have the product that will ignite a whole new generation of lovers of this ever expanding genre. Sounding like a cross between DANGER DANGER and DEF LEPPARD, with a hint of BON JOVI/WHITE LION/SKID ROW/POISON - among others, getting the picture? Full of big harmonies, big choruses with the majority of songs herein are catchy, crunchy, commercial and above all else - very infectious if you love this style. CRAZY LIXX's new second album, "New Religion" - is packed to the rafters, with so many good consistent tunes which should see the bands' popularity soar in the world of melodic rock. While it's not as meaty as acts like, HOUSE OF LORDS/JADED HEART/GOTTHARD or the up-coming TREAT return CD, musically speaking, the band is more intune with other Swedish atcs like, CRASH DIET and HARDCORE SUPERSTAR. Like the above mentioned acts, CRAZY LIXX too have plenty to offer fans. Most of the songs here are mid tempo hard rockers like opening track, Rock In A Hard Place - which is a standard by the numbers rocker that's cool while the absolute DEF LEPPARD rip-off, My Medicine - could of been lifted from 'Hysteria' - it's that close, regardless - it's a pretty good tune! Reeking of 'classic' BON JOVI is, Til I Die - a driving rocker that pulsates with passion, while the light 'n' shade groove of, Blame It On Love - should have young girls fantasizing and swooning over the bands' posters on their walls. We up the tempo again on, Road To Babylon - a crunchy little rocker, topped off with BIG harmony chorus ala JOVI territory again, then we head down WHITE LION territory via, Children Of The Cross - with a tasty tune full of light 'n shade, wait until Mike Tramp here's this song? The tough sounding crunch of, The Witching Hour - has a SKID ROW taste and is one of the standouts herein. The straight drive of, Lock Up Your Daughter - is impressive but it's the absolute infectious groove of, She's Mine - which is definitely, the album's 'high-point' - with a chorus that should have radio programmers adding this tune - it has HIT written all over it?! Thankfully, there's only one ballad, What Of Love - which is a cross between Leppard/Jovi in style, with a song that'll have cigarette lighters raised at venues everywhere! Closing this very satisfying album is, Voodoo Woman - again slipping into Leppard territory with a great song to finish on. My only beef is that CRAZY LIXX sound, too much - like certain acts that's far from a sheer coincidence or a homage. CRAZY LIXX's "New Religion" - will be regarded by some as a 'classic' hard rock release and I'd have to agree - except for their lack of originaity, it's a very well put together product, that sounds good, has a good groove throughout and is a very consistent release - that will be loved by many! | ACE FREHLEY - Anomaly (Riot)
While Ace Frehley's fortunes haven't exactly been kind to the man over the years, his guitar playing, groove, attitude and his own unique style, have made him a firm favorite - with many fans and that alone seperates him from the pack of guitar heroes. His former band, KISS have released countless products since his departure in the early 80's - some including myself, would say that KISS have never really fully recovered, with most of the their product, including their latest CD - missing the mark with a long line of rather pedestrian and fairly insipid releases over the years. While Frehley is no Bruce Kulick - techinally speaking, Frehely's passion, feel and melody in his playing - far outshines many 'so called' - great guitar players. The former KISS guitarist has released numerous products since his sacking, his trumph card - still being his 1978 self titled solo outing, released under the KISS banner as one of the four solo albums released simaltaneously. The runaway success of Frehley's solo album that featured the TOP 40 hit, 'New York Groove' - probably upset the egos of certain band members - Simmons springs to mind, who's own sales were far below that of the 'space' ace release! Ace Frehley's new solo album titled, 'Anomaly' - is exactly what I'd expect from Frehley with his zany style, weaving his ceratin magic throughout this enjoyable product. While this CD was released in the second half of 2009, we've now posted it's review prior to Ace Frehley's Australian Tour in February 2010. Upon listening to the new CD is becomes almost instantly apparent, that Frehley is doing what comes natuarlly - writing tasty flavoured hard rock with a touch of humour, diversity and above all else, a good commercial groove. The songs herein - far outweigh anything on the latest KISS disaster, with so much more on offer. Opening tune, Foxy & Free - instantly sets the groove with a quirky tune that has Ace stamped all over it, while the chunky, Outer Space - is 'classic' Ace, topped off with a marauding riff and some tasty licks. Another standout, Pain In The Neck - possesses a heavy groove, complete with a rolling chorus and a quaint bridge mid song all topped off with a great little solo - which really shows his likeable style. Next up is a cover of THE SWEET's Fox On The Run - which is fairly close to the original with just a hint of Frehley's influenece, making it a very cool and satisfying rendition. The slow grind of, Genghis Khan - is virtually an instrumental, except for the occasional chanting chorus, showcasing a nice excursion with plenty of feel and taste. Another quirky flavoured tune, Too Many Faces - is almost pop by comparison with Frehley's underlining style shining through, but it's the ballad groove of, Change The World - that features a nice light 'n shade appeal with an infectious feel and again, some tasty lead licks. Ace gets to stretch his fingers on the instrumental, Space Bear - with a ton of groove, cool licks and some tasteful soloing from the man. Another slice of light 'n shade appears via, A Little Below The Angels - which wanders through pop territory, then we zip into up tempo mode via, Sister - a tough little rock song that crunches along with groove, guts and attitude - all with substance and style. The cruising feel of, It's A Great Life - showcases another 'classic' sounding Frehley tune that has instant appeal, while the closing instrumental song titled, Fractured Quantum - is a great way to finish off a reasonable offering from ACE FREHLEY that should satisfy many long-time fans. ACE FREHLEY's "Anomaly"- may not set the world on fire, it is however what most who love the man would expect, a journey through space and time all held together with his own unique style and tasteful arrangements that show class all the way. While his former band has tried to bridge the gap with a decent product - without Frehley, they've never achieved that 'special' something - ever again! Fear not, it's here in all it's glory with ACE FREHLEY simply showing who gave KISS that magic spark - they've missed for so many years now. A good product that should be loved by many! (8/10) |
| KEEL - Streets Of Rock & Roll (Frontiers)
I won't waste time and space with a drawn out history of this re-formed 80's US hard rock band, KEEL - that's what my space and web pages are for. Suffice to say that there new 'return' product titled, "Streets Of Rock & Roll" - is a very good return indeed! KISS bassist, Gene Simmons produced the bands' second, "The Right To Rock" (1985) - which sold a shit load and was one of the highest selling debut platters of it's time! KEEL's 3rd release, "The Final Frontier" (1987) - followed and was again loved by many but thereafter the band, along with many others - seemingly disappeared from the metal world, with the onslaught of Grunge - just a few years later. Regardless, KEEL have reformed and have released their new 'come-back' album/CD, "Streets Of Rock & Roll" - which is an excellent sounding, well produced product that captures the band in all it's fabulous glory. Produced by Pat Regan, the CD is crisp and definitely is a well rounded sounding product, I however find the overall sound a little dated and not heavy enough for my liking but that's just a personal opinion. Opening proceedings is the title track, Streets Of Rock & Roll - a medium paced melodic rocker that ambles along very nicely, establishing a good feel and showing the boys are back in style. The charging anthem rock of, Hit The Ground Running - is 'classic' KEEL with killer riff, twin harmony solos, great groove complete with gang vocal chorus, all wrapped into a great rock song. Up next is the frantic pace of, Come Hell Or High Water - another chest beater with class, crunch and 'classic' - written all over it! We cruise down the highway via, Push And Pull - which reeks of ultra cool with a feel, that easily shows why the band are regarded as one of America's finest hard rock acts from the mid 80's - sheer class! As with most 'old school' bands, the dreaded ballad emerges and to their credit, KEEL serve up a real tear-jerker of impeccable quality - up their with any of their contempories! Thankfully, it's back to ass-kicking rock with, No More Lonley Nights - a medium paced bruiser that is more 'classic' KEEL with catchy melody, cracker riff, great guitar play, with some very good sounding solos and tasty twin harmony leads - lovely! The hits keep coming with arguably the CD's highpoint, a cracking driving hard rock song titled, The Devil May Care - which really does, have it all! A killer riff and infectious groove, anthem chorus and the band firing like a maseradi - brilliant! In-fact it reminds me of two vintage Australian hard rock acts, HEAVEN or TYRANT - with avery similar sound and style. The melodramatic, Looking For A Good Time - sounds like another single/video material to me, a quaint but catchy little rocker. The riffola of and dynamics of, Gimme That - has an almost 'epic' quality to it, with a song that's similar to WHITESNAKE'S - 'Still Of The Night' in overall feel and I reckon it works very well! The sleaze of Hollywood is very apparent on, Hold Steady - a medium pacer that shows a great slice of light 'n shade rock in expert hands. The pop flavoured, Live - sounds like a trip down yesteryear with a melodic, choppy rocker that has a very commerical feel and could be a future single/video - think along the lines of acts like POISON etc. Finishing up this very good hard rock product is, Brothers In Blood - an full blooded (excuse the pun) anthem rocker that fits KEEL like a glove and again the band deliver a great slab of hard rock. For 'old school' fans of KEEL - let me tell you, you will not be disappointed with this sparkling 'return' platter, "Streets Of Rock & Roll" - as it definitely gives you what you want! For newcomers - this is great, ass-kicking hard rock by one of America's finest ever 80's hard rock acts! (9/10) |
| OVERKILL - Ironbound (Nuclear Blast)
This time last year, German thrash metal 'legends' KREATOR released an awesome CD titled, "Hordes Of Chaos" that ' was one of years' best metal releases. Well, guess what - here we go again as we launch into 2010 and again, another German 'legend' metal act, OVERKILL - kick off the year in absolute crushing style, as only the Germans can with a dynamic, octaine charged CD titled, "Ironbound" - which is equal to MEGADETH' recent killer release, kicking and screaming - all the way home! From start to finish, the execution, delivery and downright tenacity is first rate - with an album of impeccable quality that delivers a crushing onslaught of excellent high quality - heavy metal music, that should please long-time fans, as well as introducing this formidable metal act - to newcomers discovering the genre! OVERKILL are a band that have produced numerous great sounding metal, over a 25 plus year career and the new CD doesn't disappoint. Don't let the solem intro of, Green & Black - fool you, as once this beast kicks into gear with it's tenacious attiutde and 'old school' style - it's all guns blazing. The furious title track, Ironbound - is 'classic' OVERKILL all the way with killer riffola, menacing and maruading it's way out of the speakers - showcasing another of Germany's finest metal exports. Up next is the pure magic (also my personal favorite -ed), Bring Me The Night - delivers an awesome display of frantic steamrolling metal, at it's finest - with a song of breakneck speed tearing through the stratosphere like a turbo charged 'Porshe' - absolutely brilliant! The epic feel of, The Goal Is Your Soul - is a relentles riffed beast, complete with chugga-chugga riffs that'll have you head bangin' in no time. The audio assault of, Give A Little - again is 'classic' OVERKILL - showcasing a brutal tune that is first class, all the way with a very infectious and somewhat at times, humourous melody line - awesome! There's no time to catch your breath as, Endless War - explodes upon your senses, with more bombastic metal, simply crushing everything in sight! A change of pace is experienced via, Head And The Heart - with a slight light 'n shade approach, with a driving riff not dismilar to MOTORHEAD's Liar (off Bastards) or even TYRANT's Parasites (off Thunder Down Under) which changes tempo mid song - into an almost modern metal sound. Next we revert back to stampeding metal courtesy of, In Vain, - a monster of metal, simply annihalating everything is sight, with a tight, tough and brutal offering. There's no let up with, Killing For A Living - again releasing a devastating slab of metal that will please many, with it's vicious attack. The album's closing track, The SRC - has all the hall marks expected by this excellent veteran metal band, with a sonic outburst of 'legend' quality - for all the world to hear - simply fabulous! Over the years GERMANY has produced numerous excellent metal acts including: SCORPIONS, ACCEPT, RUNNING WILD, KREATOR, PRIMAL FEAR and of course OVERKILL - just to name a few, and the above names are all 'legends' with metal fans the world over! German thrash metal 'legends' OVERKILL truly deliver a monster of an album in, "Ironbound" - which is equal to anything other 'legend' acts the calibre of, MEGADETH, METALLICA, EXODUS, VICIOUS RUMORS etc. have ever released. This is a bona fide 'classic' metal and what a way to kick off 2010! Contender .. you better believe it! (9/10) |
| BUCKCHERRY - Live & Loud 2009 (Seven)
Los Angeles based sleaze rockers, BUCKCHERRY - are a band that I've loved since they first burst onto the mundane music scene of the late 90's. Their 1999 'self titled' debut platter was a breath of fresh air, a robust rollicking bombastic - hard rock affair with a shit-load of attitude and some dam good tunes, that satisfied many who were bored with a world of music that was dominated by hideous hip-hop, nu-metal and alternative bands. Their break through hit, 'Lit Up' had many rejoicing, at long last a band had arrived who were saying 'fuck you' and delivering a good tough ass-kicking hard rock product. While their were some, stanch hard rock and metal acts - who delivered product through the 90's, the bottom line was countless metal acts - jumped on the alternative/nu-metal band wagon, hoping to cash in since 'hard rock and metal' - was a dirty word for many years! BUCKCHERRY, however hit pay dirt with their debut album and in 2001, they followed it up with their second album release, "Time Bomb" - which unfortunately missed the mark, with only a few songs making the grade - Porno Star, Ridin' and Time Bomb - the rest were rather dissappointing, even by their standards! With less than impressive sales, the band were dropped from their label and disbanded shorty thereafter. At one stage vocalist, Josh Todd - was rumoured to be the new singer in Velvet Revolver, but we all know how that turned out - undaunted Todd released a 'solo' album, 'You Made Me' (2005) - which was a very good product, that was far superior than his former bands' insipid 2nd album release. By late 2005, BUCKCHERRY had reformed, albeit with some new members joining singer Josh Todd and guitarist Keith Nelson - releasing a 'comeback' album, their third release titled, "15" - which saw US release in early 2006. The album was a return to form for the band, containing that 'fuck you' attitude and a swag of good, ass-kicking songs, a number of which were singles - including their monster runaway hit, 'Crazy Bitch' - which again put the band through the roof in popularity. The album, "15" - went on to sell over 1 million units in the US, an enormus feat in today's burning world and it seemed the band had come full circle? 2008 saw the release of BUCKCHERRY's fourth album, "Black Butterfly" and while being a very well produced, again the band didn't deliver the 'killer' follow-up many expected, with only a couple of tunes, Tired Of You and Rescue Me standing out among a sea of second rate pop flavoured tunes that lacked, attitude or delivery that the band needed. Infact, it sounds more like pop metal icons, CHEAP TRICK than themselves, so it comes as no surpise that the band have released a new album, some 12 months after their last failure! BUCKCHERRY's new release, "Live & Loud 2009" is obviously a 'LIVE' recording, captured on the bands' last tour and while I think it's no more than a label obligation, in all honesty - it's an OK affair at best. Considering the band boasts of playing over 500 shows, the execution herein is just passable, with numerous mistakes and talk about loose! That combined with a rather average selection of tunes, let's this CD down somewhat. When I saw the band in 1999 - they kicked ass in a MAJOR way, so something's not happening? There are 15 songs on offer, the better tunes are: Tired Of You, Broken Glass, Ridin', Crazy Bitch, Rescue Me, Lit Up and Check You Head - all sounding reasonable, but far below their studio cousins. The rest well ... there's no Porno Star, Too Drunk To Fuck, Time Bomb, Dirty Mind, Out Of Line or Dead Again - these songs being among their better titles, all mysteriously having been omitted? While BUCKCHERRY's "Live & Loud 2009" - is a warts 'n all LIVE recording, it should of ripped your head off! They definitely, have the songs but the selection herein, really does let it down. A 'Live' album should represent your 'best' and for a band that portrays, an obnoxious, attitude fuelled attack - this is really not much more than a touched up 'bootleg' that features, far too many bland songs that just doesn't pack the punch it should! The next studio effort needs to be a 'killer' or BUCKCHERRY - will end up in the bargin bins! (5/10) |

| SCORPIONS - Sting In The Tail (Sony)
One of the world's finest ever hard rock acts, Germany's 'legendary' SCORPIONS - if rumours are true release their last studio CD, "Sting In The Tail" - which delivers exactly what fans will love, before the members retire! While many were impressed with 'Humanity Hour 1" (2007) - myself among them, being an excellent sounding product the bottom line was, there weren't enough killer songs on offer. Best moments were - 321, Hour 1, You're Lovin' Me To Death and The Cross- the rest were OK but the new CD is thankfully more like the predaccesor, "Unbreakable" (2004) - full of typical SCORPIONS hard rocking songs and boy are we happy!! After all, this German hard rock act have been treading the boards for close to 4 decades and over their long and impressive career, they have written some very good rock tunes - that will stand the test of time. In Australia, the band have never enjoyed major success - the exception of, Wind Of Change - being the ONLY song given mainstream radio airplay! The band have never toured Australia in this time - so I won't be holding my breath for the up coming World Tour! The new CD contains a dozen songs, 4 of which are ballads - the best of these being, The Good Die Young - which has a great melody, soul and a commercial groove, the others are rather all ho-hum by comparison. What really sets this album up is the rock songs - all kick in their own way with plenty of tasty riffs, dynamocs and that typical, loveable SCORPIONS groove throughout. Opening proceedings is, Raised On Rock - a stomping happy go lucky tune with an infectious lick that reminds me of their monster hit song, 'Rock You Like A Hurricane' but with a more up tempo feel - very cool! The title track, Sting In The Tail - virtually stampedes along via a chunky riff infeasted beast that drives with an almost boogie groove. The menacing slow grind of, Slave Me - is impressive and catchy all in one, with the usual awesome audio display by these veteran Germans, definitely intact for all to hear. It's relentless riff-a-rama next as, No Limit - crunches along with an almost cruise control mode, while the stomp and aggression of, Rock Zone - hammers the point home with a 'classic' sounding tune full of bravdo, licks and a great anthem chorus - excellent! The medium paced, Turn You On - has a choppy riff backed up with a commerical melody, that sticks in your head - oh yeah! The down right meaty sounding, Let's Rock - has a slow bombastic groove, cool licks and some tasty band interplay, featuring THAT awesome rhythm section, not to mention those killer solos - all great to hear! The commerical feel of, Spirit Of Rock - has a very infectious melody, that's all topped off with a sing-a-long chorus that sits well on this medium pacer. The production is crisp and full, without the heavy handed approach of the previous release, all in all a far better sounding project overall. If this is indeed, the final SCORPIONS studio release then, "Sting In The Tail" - is a very good way to finish an outstanding career. With the omission of the 3 pedestrian ballads, I would rate this CD as highly as the last WHITESNAKE release - it's THAT dam good! (8/10) |

| RATT - Infestation (Roadrunner)
Back in the day - in the early 80's, before the world had heard of the US 'hair metal' explosion, one Los Angeles hard rock act, RATT - were one of the first bands out of the sunset strip, to acheive platinum sales! Along with Quiet Riot - LA's favorite rodents, were the only other Californian based act to sale past the platinum sales mark - before, Motley Crue, Wasp, L.A Guns, Poison, Warrant, Junkyard, Great White, Guns & Roses and countless others ever tasted platinum success! During their reign, RATT had a swag of platinum selling releases, "Out In The Cellar" ('84), "Invasion Of Your Privacy" ('85), Dancing Undercover ('86), "Reach For The Sky" ('88) and "Detonator" ('91). The 90's onslaught of Grunge and in-band fighting saw the band disband, with vocalist Steven Pearcy forming a new outfit called Arcade – who released 2 albums during the mid 90's. RATT, resurfaced in 1997 releasing a 10 track CD titled, "Collage" - which featured a couple of newly recorded songs plus a few old Ratt and Arcade tunes re-worked. 1999 saw the release of a new "self-titled" RATT album, a fairly consistent package that definitely had that magic sound again. As with the '97 release, the self-titled CD featured the 3 original members, Steven Pearcy, Warren De Martini and Bobby Blotzler along with ex-ARCADE bassist Robbie Crane. Enough with the history lesson, here we are in 2010 - some 11 years later and RATT - have unleashed a new product titled, "Infestation" - which is 'classic' RATT - all the way! Today's line-up features, Pearcy, De Martini, Blotzer, Crane and new second guitarist - Carloz Cavazo. If that name rings a bell it should - Carlos was guitarist in another LA act - Quiet Riot! Soundwise, the band sounds tough, tight and terrific with all the ingredients - definitely in place. The addition of Cavazo on guitar, does toughen the sound slightly compared to the bands' earlier incanation, which featured the late, Robin Crosby. Musically speaking, the band rip through a fine collection of meaty rockers and medium pacers and one semi ballad - all contain some very cool riffs, licks, infectious melodies as well as a couple of very cool dual solos. Production is crisp, yet full bodied with today's standards outweighing their pop commerical past - with a little more grunt along the line's of Pearcy's ARCADE days. Kicking proceedings off is, Eat Me Up Alive - instantly stampedes into action with a high octaine riffed beast that has class, clout and Ratt's usual dynamics, all topped off with tasty solos. As soon as the riff rips out of the speakers on Best Of Me - you know it's a typical Ratt flavoured pop song that reeks of yesterday and not surprisingly, this is the first single/video from the album. Speaking of hit material, the infectious flavoured, A Little Too Much - is a medium pacer that has a hook, that could land a blue whale! A very tasty tune that has it all, dynamics, melody and a great chorus - all wrapped into a 'classic' sound! The swagger of, Look Out Below - is awesome with a mean, dirty riff complete with numerous tasty licks while the up tempo charge of, Last Call - blisters along. The riff infested, Lost Weekend - has a similar groove to 'Lack Of Communication' from earlier in their career but doesn't distract from a tough sounding rocker that gives it to you with both barrels. The slow grind of, As Good As It Gets - again is reminiscent of early material like, 'Wanted Man' with an insaitable groove equally as tough and enjoyable. Plenty to like with, Garden Of Eden - which has groove, tempo changes, light 'n shade and tons of swagger - just how we like it? The frantic, Take A Big Bite - blasts away via an up tempo rocker while the album's only down or slow song is, Take Me Home - a semi ballad that features a nice feel with a light 'n' shade flavour - complete with some layered keyboards - a nice touch. The balls out rocker, Don't Let Go - is the right way to finish off a this satisfying release, showing that RATT - can definitely deliver a product that's equal to any of their previous works. RATT's new CD "Infestation" is a good, solid return platter, that should have many fans reaching for their wallets and buying this excellent product. If radio plays this CD over the airwaves - then RATT might have their second bite at the cherry? With the numerous excellent albums by veteran bands already in 2010 - you can add this new RATT CD to the list - as this is a very good return product! (9/10) |

| JOHN WAITE - In Real Time (Frontiers)
TESLA - Live Across Europe (Frontiers) EXTREME - Take Us Alive (Frontiers) CINDERELLA - Live At The Mohegan Sun (Frontiers) With the resurrgeance of hard rock metal in the mainstream world, countless 'old school' acts are/have reformed and in most cases have released brand new studio products. There are of course a number of acts that are following up their recent return products with 'Live In Concert' packages and below are a few bands with new LIVE albums for release. JOHN WAITE the name probably means nothing to anybody under 30 years of age but there's no denying his long and excellent career. Back in the 80's Waite was the lead vocalist of THE BABYS - who had a number of 'hit' singles around the world and there's 3 herein. Gems likem Everytime I Think Of You, Head First and Back On My Feet Again and Waite's has also had a solo career for years, not to mention the band BAD ENGLISH. Other notable songs are, Missing You and When You See Me Smile and a meaty version of Led Zeppelin's 'Rock & Roll'. The new CD, "In Real Time" - is is a well executed and crisp sounding product - that's first class all the way! (7/10) TESLA are probably, the pick here with a well recorded and good sounding CD entitled, "Alive Across Europe" - which features 4 new songs from their last 'Forever More' CD plus a number of the bands' best known hits from the 90's including, Modern Day Cowboy, Love Song, Lil Suzy, Into The Now to mention a few. The quality and performance are second to none, showcasing one of America's finest, ever melodic rock acts with a very slick outfit that delivers a very good product. (8/10) EXTREME also follow up their recent return platter with a live package titled, "Take Us Alive" - that is basically a 2 CD 'Greatets Hits' collection that includes songs from the bands debut, through to their recent return release. Most of the 'hits' are here, Get The Funk Out, Hole Hearted, Rest In Peace, Decadance Dance, Cupids Dead, Little Girl, Kud Ego, Teacher's Pet, Monster and of course, More Than Words. All sound good, albeit in a live setting and the band sounds tight with their usual excellent performance. (7/10) CINDERELLA have released this live recording that's from a few years ago, re-packaged, "Live At The Mohegan Sun" - is an updated edition of the American 2005 'Extended Versions' release does finally include the full show over 13 tracks. It's great to hear the lads blasting out their 'hits' like, Shake Me, Somebody Save Me, Night Songs, etc. but it would be truly awesome to hear some new material! The reality is, CINDERELLA haven't released any new product since 1994's highly underrated, 'Still Climbing' (due to legal problems with a former label) probably works against them. Cinderella's latest CD, is not an essential release, unless your a 'die-hard' fan. Cinderella were a great band, but after 16 years without any new product they have slowly faded from relevance and have almost disappeared to the land of obscurity. While this is a good ive recording, it really suffers due to vocalist, Tom Kieffer's very average vocals throughout this set - really drags it down to nothing better than second rate. (5/10) |

| AC/DC - Iron Man 2 (Columbia)
As far as a compilation packages goes, the new AC/DC release, "Iron Man 2" - is a great collection of serious, 'classic' acca dacca songs - all on one CD! Containing 15 tunes - split between the bands' 2 vocalists, 8 songs feature Brian Johnson , while 7 songs feature, Bon Scott and the songs in question are seriously, some very good moments from their bands' long history. Sure, it's not rocket science as far as a number of selections are concerned, T.N.T., Highway To Hell, Let There Be Rock, Have A Drink On Me, Thunderstruck, Back In Black and War Machine - most are to be expected?! However, what seperates this 'compilation' from countless others - are the inclusion of the following tunes, a rather good mix of some very cool AC/DC tracks - I'll think you'll agree. Evil Walks, The Razor's Edge, Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be, Guns For Hire, If You Want Blood You've Got It, Rock & Roll Damnation and the much loved rareity, Cold Hearted Man! The last tune above, CHM - until recently, had only been available on the vinyl or cassette release AC/DC's excellent 1978 release, "Powerage". I actually saw the 10 track LP version on vinyl once, which has the song in the track listing. Why AC/DC has never released that album on CD is beyond me, it would sell like 'hotcakes'! That alone makes this CD a MUST have, to say it's one of my 'all time' AC/DC albums, would be a vast understatement! Not to mention, a couple more Brian Johnson tunes like, Shoot To Thrill and Guns For Hire - all definitely make it as 'classics'! AC/DC's "Iron Man 2" compilation - is a very, very clever move to all parties concerned. It will, of course - sell by the truckload and the tie in with the film, well, it's sheer genius!! (10/10) |

| KROKUS - Hoodoo (Sony/BMG)
Switzerland's major rock exports, KROKUS - have over the last 30 years copped their fare share of flak and riducule, due to the fact they sound not disimilar to Australian hard rock 'legends' AC/DC! While there are some similarities in style, it must be said that KROKUS - definitely have their own groove compared to Angus and the lads! Compared to Australian new comers, AIRBOURNE - who definitely plunder the AC/DC archives, KROKUS are far more original sounding than the new kids on the block! Back in the day, in the early 80's KROKUS racked up very impressive album sales through a number of very successful releases including: Metal Rendevous, Hardware, One Vice A Time, Headhunter and The Blitz. The bands' latest and new release, "Hoodoo" - soundwise, is closer to 'The Blitz' crossed with their mid 90's release, 'To Be Or Not To Be' in overall style and quality, serving up a consistent good package with some pretty good songs in tow. While never scaling the heights of 'One Vice At A Time' or 'Headhunter' - the new CD does however, blast through a good selection of thumping hard rock songs, that are immediately accessable. Any lovers of AC/DC styled rock, should love this CD as the band sound crisp and tight, with a solid production and all the songs have infectious hooks and choruses, with that underlining Krokus/acca dacca groove - flowing throughout. We kick off into, Drive It In - a pulsating rocker that's quick off the mark and establishes an instant groove, showing the boys are back on deck doing their thing! The cruise of, Hoodoo Woman - has a tasty feel and captivates the listener with it's quirkyness. The ball busting hard rock via, Born To Be Wild - (yes, that song which has been covered so well by many - Slade, The Cult, Rose Tattoo and a million others!) sits well with KROKUS and their version definitely, has their own subtle style weaved into it! Next up is the song, Rock 'N' Roll Handshake - which is a cool slab of rock with all the right ingriedents to make it work, and it works well. Unfortunately, this song also lets KROKUS down - because the chorus, is almost a carbon copy of AC/DC's 'Rock & Roll Damantion' - and that's why some people hate the band, because sometimes it's just too close and obvious. The sombre crunch of, Ride Into The Sun - strolls along without too much fanfare, while some may call it a semi-ballad? Commerical pop/orientated rock surfaces with, Too Hot - which has single/video written all over it. The crushing relentless riffed, In My Blood - is a definite highlight, personally speaking - KROKUS should be writing more tougher sounding tunes like this! Possessing a cracker riff, killer groove and anthem chorus - this tune sounds more akin to 'One Vice At A Time' era, what more could you want! The slow boogie of, Dirty Street - is 'classic' in every way, a proud robust blues song, soaked in old school hard rock. The stampeding, Keep Me Rolling - is an excellent bruising rocker that's another definite highpoint, a killer riff backed with a balls out attitude - awesome! The defiant swagger of, Shot Of Love - is the perfect, barroom beer soaked anthem that'll have you reaching for a cold one! The finale herein, is left in fine style with a storming rocker, Firestar - with a very familar riff (TYRANT's 'Dressed To Kill') that charges from start to finish with a high octaine rocker - of equal quality and execution! In a year of excellent return plattters, the new KROKUS album, "Hoodoo" - serves up a great slice of hard rock history, with a band that still delivers a kicking and rocking product - just like they've always done. Infact, it's far superior to the recent output by the bands' major inspiration - and after a few listens I'd say it's as killer as the recent Ratt/Scorpions returns - KROKUS are just a whisker behind them, with a great return platter - that's full of the right stuff! | TRIUMPH - "Greatest Hits" 'Remixed' (Frontiers)
Long before Candian 90's rock act, NICKLBACK hit pay dirt - Canada had produced a number of hard rock acts that have had success, a couple in-fact had 'massive' sales! There's 2 names that spring to mind, prog rockers RUSH and melodic rockers, TRIUMPH! TRIUMPH had a couple of releases that set the world on fire, with the US, Europe and yes, even the land 'down under' (Australia) - warming to the Candian trio. The bands' albums, 'Just A Game' and 'Allied Forces' - were the releases that broke the band internationally, I still remember seeing the film clip for 'Allied Forces' on mainstream TV in Australia! TRIUMPH had a number of successful albums and this repackaged and 'remixed' Greatest Hits compilation does represent the best material from this 'old school' melodic hard rock act. Songs like, Allied Forces, Magic Power, Lay It On The Line, Hold On - all my personal favorites are here. You can hear the remix on this CD with the quality of the songs has definitely been affected, for the better in most casesand the crispness sounds quite good. A couple of solos also sound different to me? Other inclusions include: I Live For The Weekend, Fight The Good Fight, Spellbound, Never Surrender, Lights Go Down, Somebody's Out There and Rock & Roll Machine - rounds out the rockers. TRIUMPH were known for their ballads with - Just One Night, Follow Your Heart and the previously unreleased song, a cover of the NAZARETH song - Love Hurts. TRIUMPH's "Greatest Hits REMIXED" is a great compilation that gives you the best of this power-house Canadian rock trio's best moments in history and they all still, sound pretty good to these old ears! | PRETTY MAIDS - Pandemonium (Frontiers)
It's been a few years, since PRETTY MAIDS released their last product, back in 2005 their "Wake Up To The Real World" was a great little package, filled with all the usual hallmarks with their usual dynamics, crunchy riffs and excellent melodies. Well guess what, PRETTY MAIDS just so happen to have their new CD, "Pandemonium"- ready for the rock world and again, the lads deliver a very satisfying and consistent product. Full of crushing riffs, killer melodies and some dam fine examples of first class melodic rock - at it's very best! Production is full, crisp and downright tough in sound, with the same usual finess and execution that really is second to none. Songwise, well there's some crackers here, that's for sure. The commercial groove of lead single/video, Little Drops Of Heaven - is as infectious as a STD, with it's melody and strong chorus that has 'HIT" written all over it. A perfect example of how to apply a light 'n shade feel and make it a very listenable and likeable tune! The melodramatic title track, Pandemonium - has it all, crunching riffs, cool melody and an almost 'epic' feel, a very good song. I.N.V.U. ( I envy you) - is a fullfilling stomping melodic rock tune, complete with pop flavour. Next we have the up tempo drive of, One World One Truth - simply blisters along with gusto, all cemented in place by another insaitable melody and cool arrangements. The commercial groove of, Final Day Of Innocence - is a bona fide future single/video with all the right stuff aboard for the ride, showcasing a clever, infectious rock song of impeccable quality. Barn storming rock via, Cielo Drive - which lives up to it's name sake, tearing along with the power of a turbo charged tank! We now come to one of the album's 'highpoints', It Comes At Night - a crunching hard rock song that simply entices the listener with it's familar yet great groove and excellent melody. The band likes the song that much that an extended version is included as a bonus track! The easy going groove of, Old Enough To Know - is almost a sedate pop song compared to the rockers herein but that doesn't detract from an excellent pop flavoured tune that would sit well on radio playlists. Back to hard edged rock via, Beautiful Madness - complete with light 'n shade flavour that lifts into a friendly chorus groove, overall a good contempory style. The crispness of, Breathless - is refreshing with it's heart definitely embeded in radio airplay territory, a quaint tasteful pop song. Wrapping up this rather pleasnt opus is the extended version of, It Comes At Night - which is 'remixed' and sounds cleaner and compressed soundwise, than it's crunchy counterpart. PRETTY MAIDS deliver a very satisfying, melodic rock release with their new album, "Pandemonium"- giving loyal fans, exactly what they crave and want. Easily, on par with numerous excellent consistent releases so far this year and PRETTY MAIDS are definitely in the mix for contender of the year ... yes, it's that good! (8/10) |

| Y & T - Facemelter (Frontiers)
In a galaxy far, far away - well, SAN FRANCISCO actually a band was born in the late 70's called Yesterday and Today. Shortening their name to just, Y & T - the band released their debut album, "Earthshaker" - in 1981 which created quite a stir, critically acclaimed by many with it's rich song writing, strong songs, excellent playing and a singer/guitarist - who could do both to perfection! While never asscertaing 'MAJOR' league sales or publicity, Y & T - have been a favorite for many old school hard rock fans for over 30 years! A succession of excellent album releases in the early 80's, "Black Tiger", "Mean Streak" and "In Rock We Trust" gained the band almost 'superstar' status with England, Europe, Japan, Australia and countless other countries warming to this classy hard rock act. During the 90's, Y & T released a number of albums, the best being, "Ten" and "Contagious" and have continued over the years, after a couple of line-up changes their last release was over a decade ago! The good news is, San Franciso's favorite sons, Y & T - return with a brand new CD titled, "Facemelter" - which features all the qualities we've come to love from this 'classic' hard rock act! There's 14 songs on offer, all contain that special quality that this band has always possessed. While Europe has 'class' melodic rock acts like, Gotthard, Pretty Maids, Shakra, Treat - to name a few, there's only a couple of US bands that have that equal quality, the highly underrated Shark Island and Y & T! What can be said is that this album doesn't have any high or low points - all the songs herein are of equal quality, whether it's the rollicking rockers like, On With The Show, Hot Shot, Blind Patriot and One Life - all are classy and all rock hard. There's a few songs that have that light 'n shade groove, Losing My Mind and Gonna Go Blind - both tunes have great licks, melody and some dam fine playing showing off the bands' quality and class. How Long - is a slow bruiser with some tasty licks, while the dynamics of the melodramatic, Shine On - is a swaggering rocker full of bite, style that has a 'classic' sound that made the band so popular. The obnoxious fueled, I Want Your Money - crunches along via a nasty riff all topped off with cool licks and an excellent melody line we all can sing along to. A moment of sheer class is showcased on the light 'n shade tune, Wild Child - stacked with a very cool mid section possessing a very nice solo. Suddenly we gallop into 'Black Tiger' territory on the robust rocker, I'm Coming Home - reminding older listeners of the pastm with a full barrel charge that sounds great and reminds the listener of the 'early years' - in flavour! If you love big heart felt ballads - then look no further than, If You Want Me - which pulls out all the tricks in the book and it works a treat. I can see many people reaching for the kleenex?! Y & T's "Facemelter" will be welcomed by many, who adore this veteran US hard rock act with a product that should please long time fans happy - with a rather reasonable return platter. While never reaching the heights of say, 'Black Tiger' - it is however a good enough, rockin' return to please lovers of this - great melodic, hard rock band! For newcomers - come and listen to a 'genuine' class act! (8/10) |

| VINCE NEIL - Tattoo's & Tequila (Frontiers)
It's been a long time between drinks for the MOTLEY CRUE frontman - as far as 'solo' recordings go! After being dumped by his Crue bandmates, back in the early 90's - Vince Neil's debut platter, "Exposed" (1993) was a well put together, at times a dangerous sounding release, complete with gun-slinger guitarist, Steve Stevens (Billy Idol) - who definitely left his mark throughout this satisfying and rawkess hair metal excursion! Hey, it even featured the 'hit', "You're Invited But Your Friend Can't Come" from the film, 'Encino Man'! Neil's 2nd 'solo' album output, "Carved In Stone" (1995) was far more rock orientated in flavour, with Stevens replaced on guitar by Brent Woods, who in turn offers a more rounded and full flavouered affair that was far more consistent and way more adventurous than it's predacessor. So here we are - 15 years later and along comes VINCE NEIL and his 3rd 'solo' album, "Tattoo's & Tequila". Straight off - as soon as you push play, it sounds good, it has a solid crunch and the band are as tight as .... ! Infact, it's a couple of guys from SLAUGHTER who are in the band and you know how good those blokes are! Once things get under way, the title track Tattoo's & Tequila - has a good groove, sits well with Vince and the song is quite catchy with a clever chorus! A change of pace sees, Another Bad Day - the only other new song on offer, is disappointing on a couple of levels. Firstly the song is, a rather bland pedestrian, radio fodder throwaway which is ho hum. Secondly, the next 10 tunes are all covers - while some are very good covers but come on VINCE - 2 new songs in how many years? You gotta be shitting me! Anyway Vince Neil has chosen some cool covers - that definitely suit his voice with some excellent renditions herein. There are some killer versions here, CHEAP TRICK's - 'He's A Whore' and THE SWEET's - 'Ac/Dc', SCORPIONS - 'Another Piece Of Meat' and THE HOLLIES - 'Long Cool Woman' - all of which sound really good and fits Neil's range perfectly! Other notable selections include, AEROSMITH's - Nobody's Fault, SEX PISTOLS - No Feelings, ELTON JOHN - The Bitch Is Back, plus a rather country flavoured, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL's - Who'll Stop The Rain. The trademark early OZZY OSBOURNE sounding rendition of ELVIS PRESLEY's 'Viva Los Vegas' is a definite highlight here, with a tenacious version of this 'classic' complete with Randy Rhodes style guitar heroics! The album closes with a bonus track, ZZ TOP's - Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers - which pretty much sums up - what's happening here! VINCE NEIL's new 'solo' album, "Tattoo's & Tequila" - is good but also a little disappointing due to the lack of more new material but surprisingly, it's a good listen and will probably satisfy most who like the man and his style?! Personally, Vince you slack bastard, after 15 years you could of had at least half a dozen new tracks on offer!! (7/10) |

| PRIMAL FEAR - Live In The USA (Frontiers)
By now most of you know of or have heard of Germany's PRIMAL FEAR - a fearsome metal band that sounds not dissimilar to UK legends JUDAS PRIEST. That my friends, is where it ends! Both bands are twin guitar power houses that have a similar groove, similar styles but both are instantly as different as - comparisons between AC/DC and KROKUS. Personally, who gives a flying fuck - I like all the above bands and if a band delivers a good product, that happens to be superior than a 'legend' band - credit to them. I've noticed with interest over the past several years now, that the British metal magazines don't seem to hold PRIMAL FEAR - with much regard or respect. Despite the fact that their last 3 studio albums, "Seven Seals", "New Religion" and the recent, "16.6" - were all far superior offerings than the above UK legends recent outputs, strangely, allhave been virtually ignored?! The poms hate to admit when someone does it better! Regardless PRIMAL FEAR keep on delivering good products as this new CD, "Live In The USA" easily demonstrates. A live DVD titled, "16.6 All Over The World" is to be released this month also. If you're one of the lucky ones who has purchased the double pack - then you've already seen the DVD! Live in concert albums are always cool, as long as they're not too doctored/touched up - as some have been over the years. We won't name names but a few - instantly spring to mind! This however, is a good genuine live recording, with a few bum notes, here and there - which truly shows authenticity, a REAL live recording! Track selection is rather impressive: Under The Radar, Killbound, Six Times Dead, Riding The Eagle, Sign Of Fear, Metal Is Forever, Chainbreaker, Nuclear Fire, Battalions Of Hate, Angel In Black, Hands Of Time, Fighting The Darkness and Final Embrace. As you can see a good selection, with half the tracks taken from recent recordings. Of course I could complain, as I'm sure there will be others who's favorite songs didn't make it - oh well! This is a great package for PRIMAL FEAR - showcasing a great metal act, that are highly underrated - and are an extremely talented bunch of hombres who definitely have some kick ass music to offer metal fans. "Live In The USA" is a great live CD that's as good as any released - with these German lads, kicking some serious freckle - along the way home! (8/10) |

| OZZY OSBOURNE - Scream (Sony)
With the release of his brand new album titled, "Scream" - the legendary Ozzy Osbourne will be under major scrutiny by his legions of fans - as this is the first product in over 20 years not to feature, gun slinger guitarist Zakk Wylde! The new CD is again produced by Kevin Churko - who produced Osbourne's last, excellent 2008 release, "Black Rain" - and again the production is faultless with a chunky thick, crisp and full rounded sound which sits very well on the CD deck. Musically speaking, the new CD "Scream"- is a virtual smorgasboard of tasty Ozzy songs that showcase a well rounded and very satisfying Ozzy Osbourne album. There will be many - who will disagree but there's no denying, that this is a very well put together album, containing good songs, different ideas and above all else - Ozzy Osbourne sounding as good as ever with a very consistent product indeed! It's almost like an Ozzy best of - musically speaking, with moments from all his past years in coporated herein. Opening song, Let It Die - has like a mini intro, then crawls in on all fours around the carpet and heads up the walls with a hypnotic riff and instant melody that's unmistakable Ozzy doing his thing and boy does he sound good! The first single/video, Let Me Hear You Scream - is one of the highlights with a typical 'classic' Ozzy anthem with the double O screaming his little lungs out! The droning, Soul Sucker - leeches out of the speakers with a song that really does sucks the life out of you, with an intense but likeable tune, that's complete with a nasty riff! The melodramatic groove of, Life Won't Wait - could be considered a 'sell-out' to some, me - I think it's a great, commercial tune that will sound good on radio! Next is the trump card, Diggin' Me Down - which truly is, an awesome Ozzy tune with an almost Rhodes era combined with Zakk crushing guitar tone and menacing riff, all rolled together with an old school charm - all the way 'classic! This is the album's heaviest song and it's great to hear! Tempo change and style with a commercial grooved, Crucify - has a mid pace feel with a robust relentless chorus, capped off with some tasty licks mid song - all very tasty! Living up to it' s name, Fearless - has a rollicking feel topped off with anthem chorus all cemented in place with a couple of very crunchy riffs - all good to these ears! Well, we head into epic Ozzy via, Time - a fantastic tune of 'ben hur' preportions - with a killer melody, a very intresting and different chorus for Osbourne - and it all works well. The ballistic bounce of, I Want It More - is tough, tenacious and melodic - all rolled together. The mid section is awesome with tasty licks and solos mid song, reverting back to original course, a very good sounding track! The mad hatter sounding industrial feel on, Latimer's Mercy - is a a clever tune with the lyrics distracting the listener as the music gets heavier and heavier - another cool song with Ozzy not afraid to experiment and it pays off. The closing tune, I Love You All - could very well be Ozzy's last song as maybe this is his last ever release?! Ozzy along with countless other elder metal statesman - are all approaching their twilight years and it's only a matter of time before they all start hanging up their leathers?! The new band deliver, Tommy Clufetos (drums), Blasko (bass), Adam Wakeman (keyboards) and Gus G (guitars). Most intrest will be on new guitarist, Gus - and it all sounds good to me. He never tries to emulate previous guitarists and there's a number of tasty solos, cool licks and the overall effect is quite satisfying?! There will be some who'll hate it because Zakk isn't aboard - well, no disrespect but it really doesn't matter, doubters will be in the minority! The cold hard fact is - OZZY OSBOURNE's "SCREAM" as i's a good, consistent product that easily fullfills what most would expect from Ozzy. While it may not be as in-your-face as 'Black Rain' - this new CD shows a 'legend' doing what he wants and it sounds great to me! (8/10) |
